A Healthy Obsession With Salt
Ever since I experienced a thalassotherapy sea salt water therapy pool years ago, I have been interested and a bit obsessed with learning more about the healing benefits of salt and salt therapy!
I remember feeling so incredibly relaxed after emerging from the thalassotherapy pool on a transatlantic crossing I took in my 20’s. The warm sea salt water made my skin felt and look noticeably smooth and toned.
Not as well known in the United States, Thalassotherapy pools are heated sea water “hot tubs” with jets… the warm sea water has many benefits. It’s basically like a huge hot tub filled daily with pure ocean water and then heated. It is a popular form of natural therapy in many countries for its benefits on the body.
Natural therapies like salt therapy are becoming more popular as people are looking for more natural remedies as a way of natural health care. Mother nature has gifted us with loads of natural ways to take care of ourselves.
The gym where I live in Gainesville Florida recently added a Pink Himalayan salt sauna! Thank you Gainesville Health and Fitness!! For someone obsessed with the benefits of Salt therapy, I was excited to try it out!
I noticed some pretty awesome benefits after being in the salt sauna. My skin felt so soft!! My breathing felt super clear, and I also felt a lot less stiffness in my body and completely relaxed.
Sitting in the salt sauna and hearing others share the benefits they were noticing from frequent use, prompted me to look a little deeper and learn more about the benefits of this pink Himalayan salt in particular and why it is beneficial to our bodies.
A Little History About This Ancient Salt
Pink Himalayan sea salt is known as the cleanest, purest and one of the most beneficial salts on the planet. This salt is hand mined from the Khewra salt mine located near the Himalayas in Pakistan. Formed some 250 million years ago from an ancient primal ocean.
Geologists believe that the Great Salt Range was formed when tectonic plate movements formed a mountain range that trapped a shallow inland sea. The sea slowly dehydrated and buried deep in the earth mineral rich sea salt deposits.
Pink Himalayan Salt and Essential Minerals
Pink Himalayan sea salt contains 84 minerals and trace minerals. Getting minerals into our bodies is essential for optimal health! It’s super important for building strong bones, teeth, blood, skin, hair, nerve function as well as muscle and metabolic processes. While relaxing in a salt sauna, or warm bath with pink Himalayan salt added, the minerals are absorbed into the skin.
Benefits of regular use of a Pink Himalayan salt sauna
The use of salt as a health remedy has been around since the Greeks, when Hippocrates recommended salt inhalation as a respiratory treatment.
One of the most notable benefits of a salt sauna is the effect it has on the respiratory system. Salt saunas can help eliminate excess mucus and help those suffering from colds, the flu, and in some cases, and even asthma.
In addition to entering the body through the respiratory system, salt is also absorbed through the skin. The warmth of a sauna opens the pores of the skin, allowing easy absorption of many of the approximately 84 beneficial minerals present in salt.
Many adults who suffer from acne use salt saunas or a home variation of halotherapy (salt therapy) in the treatment of their condition. Many people who regularly visit salt saunas see an improvement in skin breakouts.
As far as skin health goes, regular use of salt saunas has also proven to be invaluable with relieving the symptoms of Eczema. Salt sauna sessions increase blood flow in the skin and, much like in the lining of the lungs, works to reduce inflammation, redness, swelling, itching, and drying.
While it is not a replacement for appropriate medical care, halotherapy can greatly reduce the frequency and severity of Eczema flare-ups.
No Salt Sauna, No Problem
If you don’t have access to a Himalayan salt sauna, therapeutic salt baths are extremely healing and also very beneficial.
For thousands of years, salt baths have been highly prized medicinal therapies. Hippocrates first discovered the therapeutic qualities of seawater and salt baths when he saw their healing effects on the injured hands of fisherman – curing both infection and pain.
Our bodies contain the same concentration of minerals and nutrients as sea water.
Taking a mineral bath is a kind of therapy. This type of therapy is much more well known and very popular throughout Europe. Balneotherapy is the treatment of diseases by bathing in mineral water.
Since Pink Himalayan sea salts are so rich in minerals, soaking in a solution of salt and warm water helps to instill the skin and body with minerals.
Baths are a wonderful way to de-stress and relax the worries of the day away. To make your bath a therapeutic experience, just add pink Himalayan salt.
Containing numerous minerals that are important for our health – including calcium, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium and zinc – Himalayan pink salt is one of the best things to soak in.
Salt has antibacterial and antiseptic properties making it a useful therapy for those with eczema, acne or psoriasis.
