Green Smoothie

How many of us are really getting enough greens in our diet? Drinking raw green smoothies are an easy and delicious way to get loads of gorgeous greens into your diet.

Raw greens are loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, live enzymes, photonutrients and yes, even protein!  My yoga teacher Kelly first introduced me to Green smoothies. I took one sip and was hooked!  I could not believe that this sweet delicious smooth yummy drink actually had 2 cups of raw spinach in it. It was like I had discovered this magical green health drink.

To make a green smoothies you need a high speed blender. I know that high speed blenders are pricey, but it is truly an investment on better health, gives you incredible energy and many people have lost tons of weight drinking green smoothies(if that happens to be one of your goals).

Vitamix and Blentecare the most popular high speed blenders that I have heard of, however I found a great deal on a Wolfgang puck commercially rated high speed blender on HSN. I paid 149.00 and that included shipping. My sister, Julie uses her Ninja blender and she says it works great.

The fist day I got my blender I made a green smoothie for my 21 month old, Andrew.  I used 1 banana, a small bunch of raw spinach (start with a small amount of greens – you can always increase later) and 3/4 cup of water.  I was completely amazed and delighted that Andrew drank the whole glass of green smoothie! He loved it!  I told him it was a milkshake and now he asks for his “milkshake” all the time.

The secret power of green smoothies are that they are so delicious you don’t even know they are so GOOD for you!

Green smoothies are easy to make

I used to make green juices with my juicer and it was messy and expensive and time consuming to clean up.  Making green smoothies are so easy, plus my body loves the fact that it’s getting the complete goodness of all the greens and fruit – fiber and all!

When starting out, it’s best to make your smoothies more fruity and slowly start adding more greens as you go along.

My husband is even craving them now!  We both now start our day with a delicious green smoothie.  They are great for people on the go – we just throw ours in our travel cups and I usually drink mine on the way to the gym in the morning.   I also started giving my dog, misty any leftover green smoothie and she loves them too!

Green Smoothie Recipes

 Banana-Spinach Smoothie

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 banana
  • 1 or 2 handfuls of spinach

Blend in your high speed blender.

Banana-Pineapple-Spinach

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup pineapple
  • 2 handfuls of spinach

Blend in your high speed blender.

You can substitute Kale, Romaine, Swiss chard or any other greens you want, as well as your favorite fruits.  Have fun and get creative!   It’s a good idea if you are drinking lots of green smoothies to rotate your “greens”.
