A Life Long Love of Lavender
As a life long lover of Lavender, I’m passionate about sharing it’s many benefits and uses.
With it’s many uses, it is one of the best and versatile essential oils to have in your home and when you travel. We never leave home without our Lavender:).
Not a day goes by that we don’t use this gift of nature in our home. As someone who is very familiar with nervousness and anxious feelings, I have found this oil to be extremely helpful!
As a young girl, I spent many summers with my British grandmother in England. She grew English lavender in her beautiful garden. Last year I was able to visit lavender fields in the Cotswolds while visiting England.
It’s something I’ve always dreamed of doing! It was a special experience for me. They even had a little cafe where they sold Lavender and Lemon cake!
We toured the Distillery and the smell was unbelievable!
When we returned back to our air BnB cottage that evening and I burned my hand very badly with boiling water….
Can you guess what oil I reached for? yes! Lavender essential oil!!
I quickly doused my hand in neat Lavender and the pain and redness went away quickly. I repeatedly applied the lavender and by the very next day the redness was gone, and my skin did not peel!
A Little History of Lavender
Perhaps one of the most well-known plants of all time, Lavender has some amazing benefits for body, mind and spirit. Lavender has been used since ancient times and has been in documented use for 2,500 years.
The Ancient Egyptians used lavender extensively, When Howard Carter, an English Egyptologist, entered King Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1923, a faint scent of lavender could still be detected, even after some 3,000 years. The Egyptians used lavender oil in their mummification process.
The Ancient Romans recognized lavender for its healing and antiseptic qualities, for its usefulness in deterring insects, and used it in washing. The word Lavender comes from the latin word, lavare, which means, “to wash”.
They also used the oils for bathing, cooking and scenting the air. Roman soldiers took lavender on campaigns with them to dress war wounds.
8 Amazing Benefits of The Essential Oil of Lavender
Here are some of the ways we use Lavender essential oil in our home:
#1 Lavender For Burns a Must Have For First Aide!
Lavender has many useful benefits far beyond that of scenting soaps and perfumes. It has long been renowned for it’s ability to heal the skin and burns.
In 1910 René-Maurice Gattefossé, who is considered the modern day father of Aromatherapy, discovered the benefits of lavender after badly burning his hand in a laboratory. He was amazed at how quickly his burn healed without scarring.
For First Aide relief from minor burns keep a bottle of pure Lavender essential oil in the kitchen provides first aide for minor burns from scalding, or burns to the outer layer of the skin.
Lavender has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties that can help prevent infections. Just like with burns, it’s analgesic (pan relieving) properties come in helpful especially with little ones. We use this often with our boys on scraped knees and scratches and minor cuts.
For relief, apply undiluted to burn immediately. This will help greatly with reducing pain and redness and possible scaring.
Always seek medical help for 2nd or 3rd degree burns. I have personally used Lavender for burns from scalding water and from accidentally touching a hot pan or reaching into the oven. It amazes me how FAST it relieves pain from burns.
Also relief from sunburns after spending too much time in the sun. Apply a few drops to unscented lotion or coconut oil and apply to sunburn.

Lavender is known for it’s deeply relaxing and calming qualities.
The essential oil and its main components, linalol, and linalyl acetate have been shown to have pronounced sedative properties. Here are 5 simple ways to incorporate more lavender in your life and into your nightly routine for calming the mind and getting a better night’s sleep. #3 Excellent for cuts and scraps
Another excellent first aide use of lavender is for minor cuts and scrapes. Lavender has powerful antiseptic properties and is excellent for helping cleanse a cut.
I used Lavender yesterday after my son came inside with a cut he got while playing outside. we gently cleansed the cut and then I applied a few drops neatly (without dilution) on the cut. doTERRA lavender is so pure so you can do this and it does NOT sting. It is totally soothing and even helps with the discomfort as well!
After cleansing cut with mild soap and water, apply 1-2 drops pure lavender oil directly to cut or scrape.
#4 Natural relief from stinky odors
Lavender essential oil is one of the best ways to get rid of unwanted odors! Many essential oil have anti-bacterial properties and lavender is one of them! This makes essential oils an effective way to get rid of all sorts of odors.
I’ve searched a lifetime it seems for a decent bathroom spray that doesn’t leave me with a headache from the chemicals. To make an effective, and calming bathroom spray just add a tablespoon of witch hazel to a small spray bottle, add 20-30 drops doTERRA lavender and fill the rest up with water. Wild orange essential oil also blends nicely with lavender and gives an uplifting scent as well!!
Spray a light mist from your Lavender spray bottle into your car, linen closet, on your mattress, or any other areas that could use some freshening up.
Carpet Freshener Powder for Pet Odors

Just add a few drops to some fractionated coconut oil and apply to itch areas to help reduce redness and relieve itching.
Apply lavender neatly and immediately after bee or wasp stings. It will take away the discomfort very quickly and has been put to the test many times in our home over the years and it still amazes us at home FAST it works!
#6 Calm Anxious Feelings
Probably one of the most beautiful qualities of lavender essential oil is it’s ability to help ease tense and anxious feelings.
There’s also some evidence that ingesting lavender oil may help reduce anxious feelings.
In a report published in Phytomedicine in 2012, for instance, scientists analyzed 15 previously published clinical trials and concluded that dietary supplements containing lavender oil may have some therapeutic effects on patients struggling with anxious feelings and/or stress.
Lavender has been an oil I have diffused and applied topically for years, but recently I have started adding one drop to my evening night night tea and have felt it to be helpful for relaxing my very busy mind.
Please make sure if you are considering using essential oils internally that you do your own research and also must use a therapeutic oil that has been GCMS tested for purity. I personally do not agree that they should ever be used as flavoring agents in water. Never give children essential oils internally. They are extremely potent.
#7 Lavender For Discomfort
Lavender has analgesic properties which help with discomfort. For head tension, apply to temples and back of neck.
I have found Lavender to be very helpful to a knee that I often wake up to that gives me discomfort. I love doTERRA’s lavender touch that comes in a roller bottle so I can easily roll it around my sore knee.
